Chilliwack Interchange 2008 - Call for Modules

Chilliwack Interchange 2008 is a NMRA - PNR Regional Convention, taking place in Chillliwack, BC, Canada on June 12-15, 2008. It is being hosted by the Chilliwack Model Railway Club of the 7th Division. There is a 20, 000 square foot space reserved for a Free-mo setup during this convention.

The Chilliwack Model Railway Club has been active in the Free-mo movement for several years, and have several modules that will anchor this setup. The Calgary Free-mo group has also committed to providing a strong contingent of modules, with about 20 modules currently slated for attendance.

We are looking for Free-mo modellers to participate with us. Please review the details below, and consider attending what we hope will become the largest North American Free-mo setup to date.

Guidelines for Running at the Public Show

Modules
  1. Only Free-mo modules will be included, no NMRA modules.
    1. Mini-mos will be accepted
    2. Modules built to branch line specs will be accepted
    3. Unless we absolutely run out of space, no modules that meet all pecifications will be refused participation, based on limitations below
  2. Must fully meet all Free-mo specs.
  3. Trackwork must conform to the Free-mo Standards. Anything less than 42" radius mainline is eligible for use only on a branch line. Anything less than 36" mainline radius will not be used.
  4. Track must be cleaned prior to setup.
  5. Electrical
    1. All electrical work required to operate the mainline must be in place. If trackwork other than mainline is not complete, turnouts to it must be flagged as inoperable.
    2. Accessory Bus must be installed - note that the accessory bus will be provided with 5-amp-16V DCC power from a booster. You will need to supply any power conversion required by accessories that you have attached to this bus.
    3. Loconet must be installed, and throttle jacks available on both sides of the module. If UP3/5 jacks are used, connection of track power to them is preferred.
    4. Any stationary decoder addresses in use must be registered with your preferred address. In case of conflicts, the Run Chief will decide which addresses need to be changed. Reprogramming if necessary should be done and tested before setup.
    5. 110V extension cord or non-surge power bar of at least 16 gauge, minimum length of your module, with minimum triple tap must be provided. All power to the layout will be derived from one source, surge protected, and distributed through the layout with these extension cords. Any 110V power requirements required by a module will be obtained from this. There must be at least one tap available for connection to the next module's extension cord.
  6. Facia must be painted, either Free-mo standard color or home group color.
  7. Skirting is preferred, but not required.
  8. Scenery
    1. Scenicked modules are preferred.
    2. Unscenicked modules must have all top surfaces closed in and painted an earthtone colour. Using cardboard for temporary surfaces is permitted.

Locomotives
  1. Engine will be programmed prior to the show.
    1. 4 digit addressing will be used unless the decoder does not allow it.
    2. List of locomotives, with Road Name and Road Number and preferred 4 digit address must be supplied in advance. Conflicts will be resolved by the Run Chief.
  2. DC running will be turned off in all engines -command station will be configured to not produce a DC signal.
  3. Only DCC engines will be allowed on the layout.
  4. Sound set at *low* volume level
    1. Can be heard next to loco but not across room
    2. Adjust volume levels and do so before the show
    3. Use sound prototypically
  5. A programming track will be provided for adjustments that may be required at the setup.
  6. BREAK UP CONSISTS AND DISPATCH LOCOMOTIVES when taking them off the layout.

Rolling Stock
  1. Reliable rolling stock only, all in good repair, wheels must be clean
  2. No equipment that won't run well on accepted modules
    1. All equipment tested prior to setup by owner
    2. Metal Wheels preferred and highly recommended
      1. all wheels in gauge
      2. RP-25, 110 or 088 wheels only - flanges deeper than RP-25 will not work on some track work.
    3. Couplers at proper height - Kadee or equivalent
      1. coupler trip lever at proper height or removed
      2. NMRA weighted or overweighted except for unit trains
  3. Unit train exceptions
    1. Unit trains are made up of cars that are weighted either under or over the NMRA standard and that are operated only with themselves and not intermixed with any other equipment
    2. Unit trains must operate reliably in both forward and reverse directions since backing may be required by the configuration of the setup
  4. Train consists correct for era of loco
    1. No steam pulling maxi-autoracks with a caboose!
    2. No mismatched locomotive/caboose combinations

Faulty or Out-of-Specification Equipment
  1. Equipment not adhering to the above specifications can be removed from the layout by the Run Chief or his assistants.
  2. Equipment that has a problem running on the layout may be removed by the Run Chief or his assistants.

Staffing the Layout

A staffing schedule will be created. All participants will be required to work some shifts at the layout. At any given time there will be a Run Chief, and a number of operators scheduled to be at the layout. The minimum number of operators required at one time will depend on the final size of the layout. You are welcome to run at other times, but you will be required to be at the layout during your shifts.
