Othello Prototype Tour - Friday June 13th, 2008 - Escorted Tour

This is an escorted tour to the Othello - Quintette Tunnels / Hell's Gate / Boston Bar - North Bend.

First the tour starts off with a visit to Othello and the Quintette Tunnels** on the former right of way of the Kettle Valley Railway. While the tracks have long since been removed but you can still see the rugged beauty of the area and the incredible engineering feat required to build this portion of the KVR.
Time at location: One and a quarter hours.

Next is a stop at the famous Hell's Gate, where we travel on one of the Airtrams descending 142 metres (500') in order to cross the Fraser Canyon to the village below for a soup & sandwich lunch. Here you will see the mainlines of the Canadian National & Canadian Pacific Railways, with CN located on the south side of the Fraser River and CP on the north side.
Time at location: One and a half hours.

Then it is on to Boston Bar (CN Yale Sub-Division: Crew change location) and just across the Fraser River to North Bend (CP Cascade Sub-Division: Crew change location) for various photographing opportunities.
Time at location: One and a quarter hours.

** Please note that our Guest Speaker, Mr. Barrie Sanford, will be talking about the Kettle Valley Railway, which is the subject of his excellent books "McCulloch's Wonder" and "Steel Rails & Iron Men", at our Banquet on the Saturday night, June 14th. It was in part through the Quintette Tunnels that the KVR wound its way down the dangerous Coquihalla Canyon.

Cost: $60 per person (regardless of age), which includes the Bus Fare, Airtram Ride and Lunch.

Important Notice(s):

This tour requires a fair amount of walking and there will be some mobility challenges. We will depart from Chilliwack Heritage Park at 8:30 am and will not return until 4:30 pm. It would be wise to wear suitable walking shoes and clothing.

There are only 46 seats available and the tour is offered on a first come first served basis. Should there be less than 20 sign up for the tour it will be cancelled.

West Coast Railway Heritage Park Prototype Tour - Monday June 16th, 2008 - Escorted Tour

This is an escorted tour to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish, BC.

The West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish, BC, which is located an hour's drive north of Vancouver on the very picturesque Sea-to-Sky Highway, will provide an opportunity to tour authentic railway equipment in various stages of restoration. In all there are 65 vintage railway cars including freight cars, MoW cars, passenger cars, cabooses and two Budd cars and thirteen locomotives. In addition we will see a significant collection of railway related artifacts; travel around the 12 acre Park on a three km mini-railway; and, visit the Park's "G", "HO" & "N" Scale layouts.

It is also hoped that we will be able to visit the Car Shops at the CN formerly BCR Squamish Railway Yard, where the West Coast Railway Association do the restoration work. This visit would entail riding a Budd RDC from the Park to the Yard and return.

Following the approximately three hour visit to the Park we will stop at the Squamish Wildwood Restaurant for a lunch of either a soup, salad & sandwich or soup and chicken caesar wrap.

Cost: $75 per person (regardless of age), which includes the Bus Fare, Park Entrance Fee - Visit and Lunch.

Important Notice(s):

This will be a long day as we depart from Chilliwack Heritage Park at 7 am and will not return until 5:30 pm. Travel to Squamish and return will take approximately six hours. It would be wise to wear suitable walking shoes and clothing.

There are only 46 seats available and the tour is offered on a first come first served basis. Should there be less than 20 sign up for the tour it will be cancelled.
